You can use the four "C"s, a set of industry-accepted grading criteria, to determine excellent diamond quality and recognize the best diamond value. We'll teach you these criteria so that you can choose the perfect diamond.

Diamond Cuts

Ideal Cut: Only for round diamonds. Produces maximum amount of light reflection.

Very Good Cut: A better value than an ideal cut. Reflects nearly all light.

Good Cut: An excellent value. Reflects back a large percentage of light entered.

Fair Cut: Maximizes carat weight, not sparkle.

Poor Cut: Results in very little brilliance.

Tobin Tip
Here are our recommendations for remaining on budget.

  • For the brightest diamond at the best value, choose a diamond with a good cut.

  • For an ideal- or very-good cut diamond, consider less expensive grades of color and clarity — try a diamond with G or H color and SI-2 clarity.
    CUT
The geometric proportions, or cut, of a diamond determine how much a diamond sparkles. Tobin Jewelers carries only the highest grades of diamond cut, which present the most beautiful brilliance. The differences between the highest grades of cut are hardly visible yet greatly vary in cost, so you may find great value in a carefully selected grade of cut.

    COLOR
The highest-quality diamonds have no color at all. Tobin Jewelers carries diamonds with the highest grades of color, as the slight yellow or gray tones in low grades of diamond can be noticeable to the unaided eye. Diamonds ranging in the highest color grades may appear identical to the unaided eye especially when mounted, yet vary hundreds of dollars in price.
    CLARITY
Completely clear diamonds with no inclusions (or internal flaws) are rare. Clarity grades are based on the number and size of the inclusions in a diamond. Tobin Jewelers diamonds have some of the best clarity rating available. For the best diamond value, we suggest you look for diamonds that have no inclusions visible to the unaided eye.
    CARAT
The size of a diamond is most often measured by carat weight. Generally, the more carat weight of a diamond, the more expensive it is. Read more about carat weight, so you are sure to choose the best size for you.
